2014 Matthew Barret ‘Petit ours’- Côtes du Rhône

From biodynamic wizard Matthieu Barret—best known for his top Cornas—comes ‘Petit Ours’ (Little Bear), a playful yet seriously drinkable Côtes du Rhône Syrah. Grown on clay-limestone soils in the Southern Rhône, this wine blends grapes from trusted organic growers with Barret's hallmark low-intervention style: native yeasts, no new oak, and minimal sulphur.

The 2014 vintage was cooler and more restrained than the Rhône’s recent solar years, giving this wine lifted aromatics and fine freshness. Expect notes of blackberry, cracked pepper, and violets, with soft tannins and a savoury edge—more Northern Rhône in character than you might expect.

Barret farms over 20 hectares in Cornas but launched Petit Ours as a fun, accessible label. It’s perfect with grilled aubergine, lamb koftas, or sausage and lentils on a chilly evening. Rustic, honest, and full of charm—proof that Rhône Syrah doesn’t need to be expensive to be delicious.
