Nestled on the right bank of the Gironde estuary in the Bordeaux region, Château Maison Neuve benefits from clay-limestone soils typical of Blaye, providing good drainage and helping the vines achieve both ripeness and freshness. The estate is family-run under vigneronne Alexia Eymas, part of a generations-old lineage, and its approach is “culture raisonnée”.

The 2020 “Alexia” is a Malbec–Merlot blend (roughly 50/50), crafted with careful sorting, 40-day fermentation and 18-month ageing in vat (rather than heavy new oak) to preserve freshness and purity.

On the nose you’ll find sumptuous blackcurrant and cassis aromas, floral spice and a hint of bramble. The palate is medium-full, with smooth tannins, juicy dark fruit, touches of liquorice and a lingering finish of mineral chalk and ripe plums. According to one tasting note: “packed with molten blackcurrant pastilles … glossy cassis character that refreshes the finish”.

For food, this wine thrives with hearty fare: think slow-roast lamb with rosemary, duck breast with a berry glaze, or a festive beef roast with truffle mash. A strong, aged cheese board (Comté, aged Gouda) will also bring out the savoury depth of the wine.

In short: the 2020 Château Maison Neuve “Alexia” is a charming and value-driven Bordeaux from Blaye, showcasing the terroir and care of a boutique estate, ready to enjoy now and over the next 5-8 years for extra nuance.
