Giuseppe Quintarelli – Valpolicella 2021, Veneto, Italy
In the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone, north of Verona in Veneto, vineyards climb gentle hills of limestone and basalt between 150 and 400 metres above sea level. Cooling breezes drifting from Lake Garda help retain acidity and aromatic lift in the Corvina-led blends for which the region is famed. The 2021 vintage was warm and settled, producing beautifully ripe, healthy fruit with freshness intact – a superb canvas for traditionalists.
Founded in 1924 and long guided by the late Giuseppe Quintarelli, the family estate in Negrar farms around 11 hectares and produces roughly 60,000 bottles annually. Meticulous vineyard selection, partial appassimento (air-drying of some grapes) and long ageing in large Slavonian oak casks are hallmarks of the house style.
The 2021 Valpolicella is fragrant and poised: sour cherry, crushed raspberry and dried rose petals, edged with sweet spice and a whisper of almond. Silky yet structured, it pairs beautifully with slow-braised beef, game ragù or aged hard cheeses.
