The 2023 Riesling Trocken ‘Volratz’ from Schloss Vollrads is a fantastic expression of the Rheingau—Germany’s historic heartland for Riesling. Perched along the Rhine in Oestrich-Winkel, Schloss Vollrads boasts over 800 years of winemaking tradition, with documentation dating back to 1211. The estate benefits from classic Rheingau terroir: south-facing slopes, proximity to the river for temperature moderation, and soils rich in quartzite and loess. These elements combine to produce wines with structure, elegance, and mineral precision.
The 2023 vintage was shaped by a warm summer and cool nights, preserving freshness and balancing ripeness with acidity. The ‘Volratz’ is fermented in stainless steel to highlight purity of fruit. It offers bright citrus on the nose—lime, grapefruit—and crisp green apple and white peach on the palate, underpinned by racy acidity and a clean, mineral finish. With around 11.5% ABV and just under 8 g/L of residual sugar, it’s dry but vibrant.
Perfect with grilled chicken, seafood, asparagus, or light Asian dishes, this Riesling is refreshingly versatile. A brilliant introduction to Rheingau’s dry Riesling style—refined, food-friendly, and full of character.
