The 1995 Pauillac from Château Pontet-Canet is a commanding, mature Bordeaux from a château that has since become a benchmark for biodynamic viticulture in the Médoc. Back in ’95, Pontet-Canet was still finding its stride under Alfred Tesseron’s leadership, but the quality was already climbing. The estate lies just opposite Mouton Rothschild, on classic Pauillac gravel soils, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon—which dominates the blend.
1995 was a strong vintage, marked by a hot, dry summer and a textbook harvest, yielding wines with firm structure and serious ageing potential. Now nearly 30 years on, this Pontet-Canet has softened into something special. Expect deep notes of dried cassis, leather, cigar box, and graphite, with hints of tobacco and spice. The tannins are fine-grained but still present, offering a long, regal finish.
Best enjoyed with roast venison, aged ribeye, or truffle-stuffed mushrooms. Decant it gently and savour a Pauillac that’s aged with grace and gravitas.
