The 2002 Pinot Grigio from Banfi is an intriguing example of this typically northern grape grown in Tuscany’s rolling hills. While better known for Sangiovese and Chianti, Banfi—one of Italy’s most innovative wine estates—planted Pinot Grigio in cooler pockets of Montalcino, where elevation and breezy conditions help preserve acidity. Founded in 1978 by the Mariani family, Castello Banfi spans over 2,800 hectares, with around a third under vine, combining tradition with cutting-edge winemaking.
The 2002 vintage was cooler and wetter, but Banfi’s meticulous vineyard management yielded a fresh, well-balanced white. Expect delicate aromas of pear, white peach, lemon peel and a hint of almond. On the palate, it’s crisp yet subtly creamy with a clean, mineral finish.
Best enjoyed with seafood risotto, grilled prawns, or even a zesty caprese salad. It’s a great reminder that Tuscany can do white wine with just as much flair as its reds—when done right.
