The 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges ‘La Perrière’ from Domaine Henri Gouges is a brilliant expression of Pinot Noir from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most respected traditionalists. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges since the 1920s, the Gouges family farms around 14 hectares, all organically, with a particular focus on site transparency. La Perrière is a monopole — solely owned by the domaine — and sits on stony, iron-rich soils that lend structure and age-worthiness.
The 2012 vintage in Burgundy was tricky, with low yields due to hail, but ultimately delivered wines with freshness, precision, and great ageing potential. This bottle shows classic dark cherry, blackcurrant and earthy spice, wrapped in fine, firm tannins and a mineral core. Still fresh, with a savoury, gamey edge emerging with age.
Brilliant with duck breast, venison, or wild mushroom risotto. Decant if you can — this wine is a bit of a brooder but so worth the wait. Proper Burgundy with backbone.
