The 2012 Saint-Julien from Château Léoville Barton is a superb expression of classic Left Bank Bordeaux from one of the Médoc’s most respected Second Growth estates. Owned by the Barton family since 1826, this historic château is famed for its traditional winemaking—no flashy chateau, just serious kit and serious wine. The gravelly soils of Saint-Julien, particularly on this well-placed estate, are perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon, which leads the blend with Merlot and a dash of Cabernet Franc.
The 2012 vintage was tricky early on, but a warm, dry late summer rescued the crop, leading to elegant, well-structured wines. Léoville Barton's take is textbook: blackcurrant, graphite, cedar, and a touch of violets, with firm tannins and a fresh acid line that promises further ageing potential, though it’s drinking beautifully now.
Serve with roast beef, venison, or even a rich mushroom and truffle pie—something worthy of this stately, confident Saint-Julien.
