The 2013 Treinspoor from Sadie Family Wines is a striking example of South Africa’s vinous potential, particularly from the Swartland region. Named after the disused railway line running beside the vineyard, Treinspoor is made from 100% Tinta Barocca – a Portuguese variety that thrives in Swartland's warm, dry climate and decomposed granite soils. This old-vine expression (bush vines planted in 1974) captures the raw, rugged charm of the region.
Eben Sadie, the iconoclastic winemaker behind the label, is a pioneer in showcasing Swartland’s terroir through minimal intervention and a deep respect for site. Only a few thousand bottles are produced annually, and the 2013 vintage is particularly elegant, offering earthy spice, dark cherry, and savoury tannins with a dusting of cocoa.
Decant for an hour and pair it with slow-roasted lamb shoulder or grilled venison. It’s cerebral yet comforting – a true South African gem with European soul.
