From South Africa’s visionary winemaker Eben Sadie, Skerpioen (Afrikaans for “scorpion”) is one of the most distinctive whites in his Old Vine Series. Grown on a rugged, windswept coastal site between Elands Bay and Piketberg in the Swartland, this vineyard is just metres from the cold Atlantic. The mix of chalk and limestone soils is rare for the Cape, giving the wine remarkable tension and salinity.
A co-fermentation of Chenin Blanc and Palomino from vines planted in the 1950s, the 2014 vintage was cool and dry—ideal for precision and finesse. The wine is electric: citrus peel, crushed seashells, hay and a whisper of wild fennel on the nose, with a taut, saline palate and a finish that hums with energy.
Totally unshowy but deeply profound, this pairs beautifully with raw shellfish, grilled seabass or even a goats’ cheese tart
