The 2014 Freisa from Bartolo Mascarello comes from Barolo in Piedmont’s Langhe, where cool Alpine influences, rolling hills and calcareous-clay soils give the wines freshness and character. Founded in 1918, this legendary family estate farms around 5 hectares and produces roughly 30,000–35,000 bottles annually, with Maria Teresa Mascarello continuing her father Bartolo’s fiercely traditional approach. The 2014 Freisa is a lively, characterful vintage at 12.5% ABV, showing dried plum, orange peel, black tea, coffee, iron and gently herbal notes, with a little spritz. Lovely with salami, roast pork, sausage and lentil dishes; equally fun alongside mushroom pasta or Piedmontese tajarin.
