2020 Le Veau, Anjou – Domaine Belargus, Loire Valley
Crafted by Domaine Belargus, a rising star in the Loire, the 2020 Le Veau hails from Anjou Noir – a region famed for its schist-rich soils and expressive Chenin Blanc. The estate, founded by Ivan Massonnat in 2018, focuses solely on Chenin from single vineyards, much like Burgundy's approach to terroir. Le Veau, a parcel within the Quart de Chaume Grand Cru area, lies on black schist, lending the wine minerality and precision.
The 2020 vintage was generous and balanced, producing wines of clarity and depth. Expect vibrant citrus, quince, and chamomile on the nose, with a textured palate showing saline tension, honeyed pear, and a long, flinty finish.
Belargus farms biodynamically, with just 24 hectares under vine. This bottling sings with seafood – think seared scallops or lemon-dressed oysters – or even roast chicken with tarragon.
