The 2020 Uvaggio from Proprietà Sperino is a masterclass in Piedmontese elegance. Crafted in the Coste della Sesia DOC, near Biella, this wine hails from a 10-hectare estate in Lessona, where soils rich in iron and manganese—formed by an ancient supervolcano—impart a distinctive minerality to the Nebbiolo-based blend. The De Marchi family, renowned for Isole e Olena in Chianti Classico, revitalised this estate, with Luca De Marchi at the helm.
The 2020 vintage, composed of 80% Nebbiolo, 15% Vespolina, and 5% Croatina, underwent fermentation with wild yeasts in open-top oak casks, followed by 23 months of ageing in large barrels. The result is a vibrant ruby red wine with aromas of red berries, rose petals, and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, it's medium-bodied with silky tannins, balanced acidity, and a lingering finish.
Ideal with grilled lamb, hearty pasta dishes, or aged cheeses, this wine offers a glimpse into the soul of northern Piedmont.
