The 2021 Karasì Areni Noir by Zorah is a remarkable red wine from Armenia's Vayots Dzor region, renowned for its rich winemaking heritage. The Areni Noir grape, indigenous to Armenia, has been cultivated for millennia, with evidence of its presence dating back over 6,000 years in the Areni Cave. Zorah's vineyards are situated at an elevation of 1,400 metres above sea level, where the high altitude and unique terroir contribute to the grape's distinctive character.
Zorah, established in 2006 by Zorik Gharibian, a descendant of Armenians who fled to Iran in 1915, focuses on producing wines that reflect Armenia's ancient winemaking traditions. The winery collaborates with renowned Italian viticulturist Stefano Bartolomei and winemaker Alberto Antonini to craft wines that showcase the indigenous Areni grape.
The 2021 vintage underwent fermentation with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled concrete tanks. The wine was then aged for 12 months in traditional Armenian clay amphorae, known as "karasi," which are partially buried to maintain a consistent temperature. An additional six months of bottle aging further refined the wine.
Tasting Notes: The 2021 Karasì Areni Noir presents a deep ruby red colour with complex aromas of red fruits, lightly spiced with an elegant toasted note. On the palate, it is full-bodied and well-balanced, with silky ripe tannins and a long, evolved mineral finish.
Food Pairings: This wine pairs excellently with roasted meats, grilled lamb, game dishes, spiced stews, aged cheeses, and charcuterie. Its versatility makes it a delightful companion for various cuisines.
