2023 ‘Karasì’ Areni Noir, Zorah - Armenia, Vayotz Dzor

From Armenia’s dramatic Vayots Dzor, the 2023 Karasì Areni Noir from Zorah is a fascinating taste of high-altitude winemaking. Zorah’s vineyards sit around 1,400–1,600 metres, where intense sunshine, dry summers and cool nights create a long, slow growing season. Sandy, stony limestone soils and ungrafted vines add to the wine’s distinctive sense of place. Founded by Zorik Gharibian, Zorah combines modern precision with ancient Armenian traditions. Made from 100% Areni Noir, the wine ferments with indigenous yeasts before spending 12 months in buried karasi amphorae. Expect red and dark berries, pepper, herbs, anise and gentle smoky notes. Pair with lamb, grilled meats, aubergine or mature cheese.
