The 2021 Riesling Kabinett Trocken “Kallstadter” from Koehler-Ruprecht is a cracking example of Pfalz brilliance. Nestled in the sun-soaked region of southwestern Germany, Pfalz boasts a warmer, drier climate than the Mosel, with loamy sandstone and limestone soils that lend this Riesling its hallmark mineral edge. Koehler-Ruprecht, one of the region’s oldest family estates (est. 1700), is famed for its unapologetically traditional approach—long fermentations, wild yeasts, and minimal intervention.
The 2021 vintage was cool and classic, yielding wines with superb acidity and balance. This Kabinett Trocken (dry) shows racy lime zest, green apple, and crushed stone on the nose, with a taut, electric palate and bone-dry finish. It’s refreshingly light (typically around 11% ABV), making it ideal with smoked trout, sushi, or a zesty Thai salad.
This bottle is a must for fans of Riesling with nerve, precision, and proper old-school charm. Serve well chilled!
