The 2021 Valpolicella Ripasso from Antolini is a lovely example of this much-loved Venetian style — rich, warming and full of character. Based in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, brothers Pier Paolo and Stefano Antolini farm about 9 hectares of vineyards nestled between 150 and 350 metres above sea level. The soils here are a mix of limestone, clay and volcanic tuff, which lend freshness and structure to the wines. The estate works organically, with minimal intervention, using only native yeasts and largely avoiding new oak, letting the fruit and terroir do the talking.
The 2021 vintage was a balanced one in Valpolicella, producing wines with both ripeness and bright acidity. This Ripasso is made by refermenting the young Valpolicella wine on the dried grape skins left over from Amarone production, adding body, richness and complexity. Expect ripe cherry and plum notes, hints of dried herbs, cocoa and sweet spice, with velvety tannins and a warming finish. It’s spot on with roast lamb, aged cheeses, venison ragu or a classic mushroom risotto. Serve slightly below room temp, and let it breathe — it’ll reward you handsomely.
