The 2022 Alba Malvazija Istarska by Matošević is a brilliant showcase of Istria’s coastal terroir and Croatia’s flagship white grape. Grown on gently sloping vineyards in north-western Istria—near Buje and the Adriatic Sea—the vines benefit from a unique mix of grey marl and limestone soils, with cooling sea breezes helping to preserve freshness. The region’s Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cooler nights, contributes to the wine’s balance of ripeness and acidity. It's a place where nature still calls the shots—and Ivica Matošević has been listening since he founded his winery in the mid-90s. Today, he’s considered a pioneer of modern Istrian winemaking, with a strong focus on indigenous varieties, minimal intervention, and sustainable farming.

The 2022 vintage of Alba is a crisp, vibrant expression of Malvazija Istarska. Fermented in stainless steel and aged on fine lees, it delivers notes of white peach, citrus blossom, pear and a touch of almond, underpinned by a stony minerality. It’s medium-bodied, dry, and elegantly textured, with refreshing acidity and a clean, lightly saline finish. It’s a wine that captures Istria in a glass—sunny yet restrained, fruity yet structured.

Food-wise, it’s incredibly versatile. Pair it with grilled sea bass, prawn risotto, fresh oysters or a lemon-dressed fennel salad. It also works beautifully with soft cheeses or light pasta dishes. Serve chilled (10–12°C) to highlight its zippy freshness. Alba isn’t just a bottle of wine—it’s an invitation to discover one of Europe’s most exciting, underrated wine regions.
