Perched atop the volcanic hill of Somló in western Hungary, the Tornai Winery is a standout in one of the country’s smallest yet most distinctive wine regions. Known for its unique terroir—basalt and lava-rich soils combined with sharp temperature swings between day and night—Somló produces wines with unmistakable mineral character. Founded by Endre Tornai in 1946, the estate now manages around 60 to 65 hectares of vines, making it the largest single producer in the region. This heritage and scale allow Tornai to craft expressive wines that truly reflect their volcanic origins.
The 2022 Tornai Premium Furmint is a fantastic example. It’s a dry wine, with about 13% alcohol, carefully balanced between stainless steel fermentation and ageing in large Hungarian oak vats on lees for three months. Expect vibrant aromas of stone fruits like peach and pear, bright citrus zest, hints of white chocolate, and gooseberry, all underscored by a distinctive crushed-stone minerality. On the palate, lively acidity and flinty, slightly salty minerality lead to a medium-plus finish with a subtle bitter almond twist.
Food-wise, this Furmint is a dream partner for roast chicken with lemon and herbs, creamy pasta, or mushroom risotto. It also pairs well with delicate fish dishes such as sea bass with beurre blanc, and softer cheeses. Best served chilled at 10–12°C, it’s worth giving the wine a few minutes to breathe and reveal its full character. Tornai’s 2022 Furmint perfectly captures the unique essence of Somló, making it a must-try for lovers of vibrant, mineral-driven whites.
