The 2023 ‘Horsmonden Dry’ from Davenport Vineyards is a cracking English white that showcases the potential of cool-climate viticulture in East Sussex. Grown on the organic-certified Horsmonden vineyard, this blend typically includes Bacchus, Ortega, Faber, Huxelrebe and Siegerrebe — grapes well-suited to the loamy clay soils and temperate British weather. Will Davenport, the winemaker since 1991, has been a pioneer in organic English wine, producing around 80,000 bottles a year, all with minimal intervention.
The 2023 vintage bursts with elderflower, gooseberry, citrus zest and a hint of grassy freshness – think Sauvignon Blanc, but with a distinctly English twist. It’s dry, crisp and aromatic, with zingy acidity and a clean finish.
Perfect with grilled asparagus, goat’s cheese salad or lemony seafood dishes, this is a wine that sings of springtime. Best enjoyed lightly chilled – preferably in a garden when the British sun decides to show up.
