The 2022 La Maggiorina from Le Piane is a captivating red from the Boca DOC in northern Piedmont, Italy. This region, nestled between the Sesia River and the Alps, boasts volcanic soils and elevations between 400–450 metres, creating a unique terroir for viticulture .
Le Piane, under the stewardship of Swiss-born Christoph Künzli, has revitalised ancient winemaking traditions. The estate's vineyards feature the 'Maggiorina' system, a centuries-old method where vines are trained in a goblet shape, allowing for optimal sun exposure and airflow . The 2022 vintage is a blend of 80% Nebbiolo, 20% Croatina, Vespolina, and 10 other indigenous varieties, all harvested and fermented together, resulting in a complex and harmonious wine .
This wine presents aromas of red cherries, blackberries, herbs, and subtle spices. On the palate, it's medium-bodied with lively acidity, fine tannins, and a persistent finish.
