The 2022 Liatiko by Iliana Malihin is a captivating red wine from the mountainous Rethymno region of Crete. Crafted from 50-year-old, ungrafted bush vines in the village of Meronas, this wine embodies the island's rich winemaking heritage. Iliana, a trained oenologist, established her winery in 2019, focusing on organic and biodynamic practices to revive ancient vineyards and produce wines that reflect Crete's unique terroir.
The 2022 vintage underwent a meticulous winemaking process: 90% of the stems were removed, and fermentation occurred with wild yeasts at 22°C. The wine was aged for eight months in a combination of third-use oak barrels and stainless steel tanks, with minimal sulphite use and no fining. Notably, Cretan music was played during maturation, a practice believed to enhance the wine's character.
Tasting Notes: This medium-bodied red offers aromas of ripe red fruits, earthy spices, and subtle herbal notes. On the palate, it presents a harmonious balance of acidity and tannins, with a lingering finish that showcases its complexity. The wine's structure and depth suggest excellent aging potential.
Food Pairings: Ideal with roasted lamb, game meats, or dishes featuring earthy mushrooms. Its versatility also complements Mediterranean cuisine, including grilled vegetables and aged cheeses.
The 2022 Liatiko is a testament to Iliana Malihin's dedication to preserving Crete's winemaking traditions while producing wines of exceptional quality and character.
