From Stellenbosch’s sunny, mountain-ringed vineyards comes Craven Wines’ wonderfully quirky 2023 Pinot Gris, made by Mick and Jeanine Craven, who established their label in 2012. The grapes come from Newlands Vineyard in the Polkadraai Hills, planted in 2007 on iron-rich ‘Koffieklip’ soils, giving this rare Stellenbosch Pinot Gris plenty of character. In a low-acid vintage, two harvests seven days apart balanced freshness with texture. Fermented on skins for seven days and aged in concrete, it emerges copper-pink, with aromas of rose, cranberry and orange, followed by red cherry, blood orange, herbs and gentle chalky tannin. Delicious with spicy Thai food, roast chicken, grilled fish or fragrant vegetable dishes.
