The 2022 Spätburgunder Trocken from Weingut Thörle is a brilliant showcase of what Germany’s Rheinhessen region can do with Pinot Noir. Based in the limestone-rich village of Saulheim, the Thörle brothers farm some of the best parcels in the area using certified organic methods, with a strong focus on expressing terroir. Their vineyards sit on chalky marl and loess soils, similar to Burgundy, giving their wines both freshness and depth. In 2022—a warm but balanced vintage—the conditions favoured ripe, clean fruit with great natural acidity, making this a particularly elegant and expressive bottling.
In the glass, this Spätburgunder is all about finesse. Expect vibrant aromas of sour cherry, raspberry, and a hint of violet, with earthy undertones and a whisper of oak from its time in used barriques. It’s light to medium-bodied with silky tannins and a salty, mineral finish.
