The 2023 Mountainside Syrah from The Winery of Good Hope is a testament to Stellenbosch's exceptional terroir. Nestled on the Helderberg mountainside, overlooking False Bay, the vineyards benefit from the cooling influence of the Cape Doctor wind and the region's decomposed granite soils. This combination results in wines with balanced acidity and finely textured tannins.
Founded in 1998 by Alex Dale, The Winery of Good Hope focuses on producing quality-driven wines that reflect the region's potential. The 2023 vintage was crafted by winemaker Jacques de Klerk, who employed traditional winemaking techniques to preserve the fruit's integrity. Grapes were hand-harvested, cold-soaked, and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Half of the wine was aged in older French oak barrels for six months, contributing subtle complexity.
Tasting Notes: This Syrah offers aromas of ripe red fruits, complemented by hints of pepper and spice. On the palate, it presents a medium-bodied structure with refreshing acidity and a smooth finish. The restrained style showcases the region's cool-climate influence.
Food Pairings: Ideal with grilled meats, tomato-based pasta dishes, or a hearty casserole. Its versatility makes it suitable for various cuisines.
The 2023 Mountainside Syrah exemplifies The Winery of Good Hope's commitment to producing wines that reflect the unique characteristics of Stellenbosch's terroir.
