The 2023 Riesling ‘Redstone’ from Gunderloch is a zippy, vibrant gem from Rheinhessen, Germany’s largest wine region—and one that’s undergone a serious quality revolution. Gunderloch, a 6th-generation family estate founded in 1890, sits on the famed Roter Hang (Red Slope), where iron-rich red slate soils give the wines their signature minerality and spice.
The 2023 vintage was cool and clean, producing wines with bright acidity and lower alcohol—just what Riesling lovers crave. ‘Redstone’ is a dry (trocken) expression, full of citrus blossom, juicy white peach, and a whiff of wet stone. It’s got that classic Gunderloch balance: tension, elegance, and a subtle salty tang on the finish.
Light on its feet at around 11.5% ABV, this is a cracking aperitif and equally brilliant with Vietnamese summer rolls, grilled prawns, or even a bit of spicy Indian street food. A modern, mouth-watering Riesling that punches well above its weight.
