Besas is a fresh face on the Austrian wine scene – only founded in 2022 – but already making quite the impression. The vineyards are tucked along the terraces above the Danube in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), where steep slopes, dry limy gravel soils and cooling Alpine air combine to produce Grüner Veltliner with character. The project is certified organic, and there’s a strong focus on typicity (i.e. wine that really says “this is Veltliner from here”).
In 2024, the wine was vinified in stainless steel (unoaked), with a short skin contact (~6 hours) to boost texture and aromatic complexity. Fermentation is cool to preserve freshness, and the finish is zesty and persistent. Alcohol sits around 12–12.5% ABV.
On the nose: citrus zing (lemon, lime), ripe peach and pear, a dash of herbs and that signature white pepper twist. On the palate it’s crisp, mineral‑lean, lively acidity, finishing clean and refreshing – not too heavy, but with substance.
As for food pairing: fabulous with fish (trout, salmon), light shellfish, or sushi. It also plays nicely with spicy or Asian food, thanks to its peppery, zesty edge. Great as an aperitif, too. Serve at about 8‑10°C to best show off its freshness.
