Nestled on the slopes of Mount Vermio in the Naoussa region of northern Greece, Yiannis Mittas tends a modest 1.8 hectares of organically grown vines in the Paliokalias site — a clay-rich terroir prized for its elevation, good drainage and cool mountain breezes. His 2024 Malagousia sees 33 days on skins (making it a subtly orange-tinged white), then six months ageing on fine lees in stainless steel, resulting in tiny production and a distinctive artisanal expression.
On the nose you’ll find scents of white peach, honeysuckle, herbal fennel and a hint of tangerine zest; the palate is fresh yet textured, with delicate tannic grip, a saline minerality and lingering citrus-pith finish. Food-wise this is a star with thyme-roast chicken, grilled sea bass with lemon and capers, or even a mildly spicy halloumi salad. It’s fun, bright, and a perfect lunch-company wine for those curious about Greek gems.
