From Piedmont’s Monferrato hills, around Canelli and Nizza Monferrato, Roberto Voerzio’s 2021 Barbera d’Asti Superiore is Barbera with serious pedigree. The vineyards are around 35 years old, rooted in clay and limestone, with Voerzio reducing yields to less than 1kg of grapes per vine. Founded in 1986, his 27-hectare estate is known for meticulous, low-yield viticulture. The excellent 2021 vintage brought ripe fruit, concentration and freshness. Expect blackberry, cherry and red-berry jam, with spice, vanilla, mineral notes, lively acidity and supple tannins. After 12 months in barriques, it’s a brilliant partner for rich ragù, roast pork, game, sausages or mature cheese.
