The 2016 Haut-Médoc from Château Goulefasian is a classic claret with all the hallmarks of a top Left Bank vintage. While not a household name, Goulefasian is a small, family-run estate quietly producing solid, well-structured Bordeaux just outside the big châteaux spotlight. The Haut-Médoc, with its gravelly soils and proximity to the Gironde, is famed for Cabernet Sauvignon-led blends, and 2016 was a dream vintage—cool spring, hot summer, and perfectly timed autumn rains leading to beautifully balanced fruit.
This wine delivers rich blackberry and cassis notes, layered with cedar, tobacco leaf, and a hint of graphite. The tannins are ripe and polished, with the sort of length and structure that rewards decanting—or cellaring for a few more years if you're patient.
It’s a natural with roast lamb, beef Wellington, or even mature cheddar. Traditional, serious, but with enough warmth and charm to make it an excellent dinner party pour.
